After years of only Mandrake Linux installations, I finally diversified. I was looking for a Linux solution that would also be acceptable to my wife, who had her own set of requirements, which included being able to easily install new software and being able to play games intended for the Windows platform. The former was satisfied by the ClickNRun application from Linspire and second by Cedega by Transgaming.

Observations

Likes

  • usb mounting/unmounting of removable media works well (though Fedora Core 3 w/ kernel 2.6 is even better)

  • CNR is excellent; downloading a CNR application puts a link on desktop, in menu, and has instructions on where to find it in the CNR status tab

  • java web start, flash all working out of the box

  • adding links to desktop, being able to run app from CNR

  • bash_completion setup by default (shows good loyalty to us commandline users)

  • keyboard repeat by default is too slow, with no customization option (had to use xset)

Dislikes

  • tendency too great for users to remain root after install

  • virtual desktops disabled by default (even when enabled, preview+name does not work)

  • disabling location bar in file manager by default is lame

  • I have utter distaste for prefixing folders with "My "

  • had to install man-db to be able to use man (seems like a bug)
